Bangalore: Siddesh Lad and tail-ender Javed Khan kept Mumbai in hunt for a first innings lead with their fighting knocks as they ended the second day at 217 for seven, trailing by just 34 runs against Karnataka in Group A Ranji Trophy match, here today.
Karnataka pacer H S Sharath and leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal took three wickets each as they cleaned up the top order, before Lad got going and brought Mumbai back into reckoning.
At stumps, Lad and Khan were batting on 59 and 33 runs, respectively. Lad cracked seven boundaries and a six, while Khan smashed four boundaries and a six as well. Both have added a crucial 56-run stand for eighth wicket, which gave a glimmer of hope for Mumbai to get first innings lead against table-toppers Karnataka.
Siddesh, who has one century under his belt in List A match, came in when Mumbai were in dire straits with 99 for five and Karnataka's 251 all out looking an uphill task for Mumbai to get past it. However, the 21-year-old right-hand batsman built invaluable partnerships of 30 and 32 with Doraiswamy Subramanian (15) and Shardul Thakur (18) for sixth and seventh wicket, respectively.
When Thakur departed Mumbai were 161 for seven, 91 runs behind hosts, when Lad and Khan dropped anchor and brought Mumbai in sight of getting a lead. But to start with, it seemed like a nightmare unfolding for Mumbai with opener Aditya Tare becoming Sharath's first victim.
What followed was a procession of sorts as the top half of the Mumbai line-up made quick return to the dressing room. Big gun Wasim Jaffer (0), last-match centurion Hiken Shah (44), Kaustubh Pawar (15) and Suryakumar Yadav (7), made brief appearances as Sharath in tandem with Gopal spell magic, getting ample support from India discard Abhimanyu Mithun, who bagged one wicket.
Resuming their first innings at 228 for seven on Day 2, Karnataka's innings folded after adding 23 runs. Right-arm pacer Shardul Thakur picked up two wickets in the morning after he sent back Mithun (9) and KP Apanna (7), ending with first innings figures of four for 65 in 22.3 overs.
The last man to get out for Karnataka was centurion Lokesh Rahul when he was run-out after adding 13 runs to his overnight unbeaten 120.

Chennai: Rajasthan made a strong start in reply to Tamil Nadu's first innings total of 318 by reaching 89 without loss on the second day of their Group B Ranji Trophy cricket match, here today.
Rajasthan openers, Siddarth Saraf (43) and Vineet Saxena (41) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day. Resuming at their overnight score of 231 for five, Tamil Nadu could do little as Rajasthan bowlers came on top.
With the strip helping spinners right from the beginning today, Aristh Singhvi and Ramesh Powar were in operation for most part of the innings today. Singhvi was more effective and claimed three wickets including that of Ramaswamy Prasanna (73), who looked set for a century. Singhvi lured Prasanna, the batsman went for a big hit but landed an easy catch to Saxena at mid off region. Prasanna made 73 from 178 balls with 10 hits to the fence.
Pankaj Singh, who ruled the roost yesterday by claiming four valuable wickets, and Aniket Choudhary shared about 20 overs between them today. Pankaj completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing overnight batsman Vijay Shankar, who scored 60 runs off 150 balls with eight boundaries and put on a 141-run stand with Prasanna for the sixth wicket.
Once, these two batsmen made their exit, only Malolan Rangarajan, wagged his willow to make 39 useful runs and was the last man out. Captain Balajaoi, Rahil S Shah and Aushik Srinivas failed to cross double digits.
For Rajasthan, Pankaj Singh (5/54), Singhvi (3/83) and Ramesh Powar (2/95) were the wicket takers.

Porvorim: Medium pacer Nizar Niyas scalped six wickets to help Kerala gain the first innings lead over hosts Goa in their Ranji Trophy Group C match, here today.
Kerala were 31-run ahead in their second innings with Nikhilesh Surendran (0 batting) and VA Jagadeesh (0 batting) in the middle when stumps were drawn for the day. Niyas shone with six for 82 as Goa were bowled out for 242 in response to Kerala's first innings total of 273.
Earlier, Goa who resumed on 11 for no loss, lost opener Swapnil Asnodkar (13) to Niyas in the first session. Other opener Amogh Sunil Desai (49) and Sagun Kamat (96) added 117 runs for the second wicket as Goa looked well on course to surpass Kerala's first innings score.
But Niyas triggered a Goan collapse as he sent back Desai, Rohit Asnodkar (1), Ravikant Shukla (0) and Keenan Vaz (0) in quick succession to leave the hosts tottering at 143 for five. Kamat missed out on a well-deserved century by just four runs as he was caught by Surendram off Rohan Prem with the score on 162. His 155-ball knock was laced with 13 fours and a six.
None of the other batsmen offered any resistance and the side was dismissed for 242. Apart from Niyas, Prem also accounted for two wickets.

New Delhi: A collective effort by Punjab saw them make an impressive comeback in the Ranji Trophy group league encounter against Delhi today with opener Jiwanjot Singh scoring a century on a lively track where his senior colleague Yuvraj Singh came a cropper for the second time.
At stumps, Punjab were 177 for three with Jiwanjot batting on 105 and Mandeep Singh undefeated on 29 with visitors stretching their overall lead to 101, having erased the first innings deficit of 76 runs. This was after the Punjab bowlers did well to restrict Delhi to 150 after being bowled out for 74 in the first innings.
For Delhi, Virender Sehwag (10) once again failed to get a big score after he was run out failing to beat direct throw from Mandeep. The star of the day was Jiwanjot, who impressed one and all with his temperament as he batted with a lot of maturity.
He has so far faced 169 balls hitting 15 boundaries in the process. The weather on the day was far better than what it was on the first day but the ball was still doing a fair bit. But the younger opener was a picture of confidence during his seventh first-class century.
This is Jiwanjot's second ton of the season after his double hundred against Vidarbha at Mohali. The opener was lucky once when Sehwag dropped him at the first slip off Rajat Bhatia's bowling when he was on 40. Otherwise, he looked solid and brought up his century with a square cut off Parvinder Awana's bowling.
Jiwanjot shared a couple of vital partnerships -- 65 for the second wicket with Uday Kaul (21) and unbroken 74-run for the fourth wicket with Mandeep. Yuvraj (4) again was adjudged leg before of Bhatia's bowling and the veteran batsman was again livid with the decision.
Earlier, Unmukt Chand (55) scored a half-century as Punjab bowlers put up a good show to dismiss Delhi for 150 in 45.1 overs. Unmukt looked solid, hitting 12 boundaries in his half-century but played a poor shot to be caught behind off Siddharth Kaul. Kaul (3/49) and Manpreet Gony (3/42) shared bulk of the spoils, while Sandeep Sharma and Jaskaran Singh got wicket apiece.
Sehwag was unlucky as he started with two boundaries but was out when Unmukt called for a quick single. Unmukt pushed a delivery towards short cover and ran but Mandeep's direct throw found Sehwag short of his crease as he ran towards striker's end.
None of the Delhi batsmen showed patience to stay at the crease for long and a lead of 76 was all that they could manage in the end. Punjab coach Bhupinder Singh Sr was satisfied with the effort of his boys.
"To make a comeback after getting all out for 74 is commendable. We have got a lead of 101 so far and would like to increase it further. All depends on what the conditions are. It helped that it was a bit sunny today but if the conditions are like the first day, it will be difficult to bat," Bhupinder Sr said.

New Delhi: Senior batsman Yashpal Singh scored a timely half-century as Services surged ahead taking a 44-run first innings lead against table toppers Railways in a crucial group B encounter at the Jamia Millia Islamia Stadium here today.
Having bowled out Railways for 107, Services finished the second day's play at 151 for eight with Yashpal scoring 67. The 59-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Soumya Ranjan Swain (32) enabled Services to get past Railways' first innings score.
Yashpal played 139 balls hitting eight fours and a six while Swain managed four boundaries in 48 balls. Earlier, Railways lost their last five wickets for only 22 runs as they were bundled out for 107 after being 85 for five overnight. Medium pacer Nishan Singh (5/21) took three out of the last five wickets to end up with career best figures.
When Services batted, they were reduced to 60 for three before Yashpal and Swain took charge. Once Swain was out, later batsmen couldn't put up much of resistance. Yashpal was gone trying to slog leggie Karn Sharma (3/25). Services will hope to get as many runs as possible in order to make Railways toil in the second innings.

Motera: Venugopal Rao scored a century as Gujarat declared at 479 for eight before Odisha reached 111 for one at stumps on day two of their Ranji Trophy Group 'A' match here today. Resuming on 287 for three, overnight batsman Rao, starting on 68, went on to score a 277-ball 177 laced with 22 fours and two sixes to put the hosts in a strong position.
The other overnight batsman -- centurion Parthiv Patel -- however failed to add any run to his last night's score of 109. Rao played a responsible innings and also put on a solid 93-run stand for the seventh wicket with Jesal Karia, who chipped in with crucial 39 runs.
Rao's dismissal prompted Gujarat to declare at 479. For Odisha, Jayanta Behera took three for 111.
Odisha began well with Girija Rout (39) putting on 111 with Natraj Behera for the opening wicket before falling lbw to Jasprit Bumrah off the last ball of the day. Odisha still trail Gujarat by 368 runs with nine wickets in hand. At stumps, Natraj was batting on 64 and he remains on course for his fourth century in as many innings.

Pune: Half centuries from Harshad Khadiwale (92) and Ankit Bawne (76 batting) helped Maharashtra reach 319 for four to secure a first-innings lead of 91 against Himachal Pradesh on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Group C match here today.
Having bowled Himachal out for 228 yesterday, Maharashtra began the second day on a positive note with a 91-run opening stand between Khadiwale and captain Rohit Motwani. Rishi Dhawan dismissed Motwani in the 27th over to extend his tally in this season's Ranji Trophy to 49, but Maharashtra carried on with a partnership of 70 between Khadiwale and Sangram Dilp Atitkar, who made 49.
Himachal fought back with two quick wickets, but Bawne put up stands of 68 and an unbroken 82 with Khadiwale and Chirag Khurana respectively, to lift the home side to 319 for 4 at the draw of stumps. Khadiwale struck 11 fours during his 92, while Bawne's 76 not out included eight fours. Chirag Khurana was giving company to Bawne on 37 at close of second day's play.

Saurashtra are still trailing by 185 runs with just four wicket remaining. Their last recognised batting pair -- Arpit Vasavada (batting 19) and all rounder Kamlesh Makwana (batting 6) -- were at the crease at close of play on day two here at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) stadium, Khandheri.
Saurashtra did not have an ideal start while replying to Baroda's 400 in a crucial tie where both teams needed outright win to keep hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage. Opening batsman Chirag Pathak and one down Sagar Jogiyani got out cheaply, making 12 and 14, respectively.

Jammu: Centuries by D Ravi Teja (153 not out) and Hanuma Vihari (109) steered Hyderabad to 341 for four on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Group C match against Jammu & Kashmir at the Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground here today.
There was no play possible on the first day yesterday because of rain but once the game started today, the visitors laid a solid platform. Put in to bat by J&K, Hyderabad got off to a good start despite losing opener TL Suman (9) cheaply.
Akshath Reddy and Ravi Teja shared a 87-run stand for the second wicket before the former fell for a well-made 49 off 87 balls with 10 hits to the fence. Vihari joined hands with Ravi Teja and the duo punished the bowling during their 203-run stand for the third wicket.
Vihari was eventually dismissed for 109, having struck 18 fours, while Ravi Teja remained unbeaten on 153 with 17 fours and two sixes. At stumps, Amol Shinde (4 not out) was giving Ravi Teja company at the other end.

Agartala: Fourteen wickets fell on day two as the Ranji Trophy Group C match between Tripura and Andhra Pradesh remained finely balanced here today. Tripura, who began the day at 165 for 9, could only add 14 to that score in five overs to be all out for 179 from 68 overs.
Andhra, however, failed to capitalise on that low score, and lost three quick wickets to stumble to 42 for 3. Bodapati Sumanth led the recovery with 55, but from 116 for 3, the visitors collapsed and were bundled out for 163 to conceded a 16-run first innings lead to Tripura.
Seamer Rana Dutta finished with 5 for 51 -- his best figures in first-class cricket -- while Manisankar Murasingh scalped three. When Tripura batted for the second time, Andhra clawed their way back into the game with three early wickets, leaving the hosts at 20 for 3 at stumps today.

Jamshedpur: Vidarbha fought back to score 101 losing one wicket in reply to Jharkhand's first innings total of 332 on the second day of the four-day Group A Ranji Trophy match at the Keenan Stadium here today. At close, Ravi Jangid was batting on 21 in the company of Faiz Fazal (41), who completed 700 runs for the season.
Resuming at 233 for five, Jharkhand added 99 runs to end their first innings. Unbeaten overnight batsmen Kumar Deobrat and skipper Shahbaz Nadeem held the forte for sometime stitching valuable 76-run for the sixth wicket partnership before Akshay Wakhare struck the first blow of the morning having Nadeem leg before.
Nadeem notched up 45 runs studded with six fours off 79-balls. Following Nadeem's dismissal, speedster Varun Aaron (3) and spinner Samar Quadri (0) returned quickly. SS Rao, who remained not out at 14, provided support to Deobrat for sometime before the latter edged a catch to Rashmi Ranjan Parida off spinner Sunit Ruikar for 69 (4X7, 6X2).
For Vidarbha, Wakhare emerged successful bowler scalping five wickets while Shrikant Wag and Ruikar shared two wickets apiece. In reply, Vidarbha got off to a fine start as openers Fazal and Akshay Kolhar (20) paired for 67 runs before Kolhar fell prey to left-arm spinner Nadeem.
Opener Fazal exhibited some decent drives on either side of the field making unbeaten 41 runs studded with six fours off 88-balls in the process while Jangid was batting at 21 with the help of four fours.
