Google developing 10 gigabits/second Internet speed

Next-gen high-speed Internet is part of Google’s speed plan, says company CFO.

San Francisco: Google is reportedly working on a new technology that will change the way we use the Internet today, speed-wise.

As reported by USA Today, Google is working on higher Internet speeds, a whopping 10 Gb/second, as compared to its existing 1 GB/second speed offered by Google Fibre in Kansas City. Google’s CFO, Patrick Pichette, revealed that the search giant is making progress towards offering the 10 Gb/s speeds during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference.

Pichette calls this the next-gen Internet and it a part of the company’s broader, long-term obsession with speed, USA Today reported. Faster Internet data speeds will increase the use of software as a service. This is users will be able to trust data intensive critical applications will run smoothly over the Internet, he explained.

He also added, "That's where the world is going. It's going to happen". It may happen over a decade, but "why wouldn't we make it available in three years? That's what we're working on. There's no need to wait," he said.

Google isn’t working on this project alone. Last year, researchers in the U.K. announced that they achieved data transmission speeds of 10 gigabits per second using "li-fi" a wireless Internet connectivity technology that uses light, as reported by USA Today.

Patrick Pichette is highly experienced in this field—Between 2001 and 2008, he served as executive at Bell Canada, which offers a fast, fiber optic Internet service to homes.

Google Fiber is presently only available in Kansas City, but the company will be extending its service to Austin, Texas. When asked whether Google Fiber will be available to more cities, "Stay tuned," is what he replied.
