Styling for Salman Khan

Budding designers should explore and market themselves
There are very few who have made it to Salman Khan’s list of favourite people and Ashley Rebello is one of them. We caught up with Ashley, who has styled the actor in most of his recent films when he was in the city as a guest lecturer at a fashion institute.
Salman is mostly seen in casuals, is it his stylist’s call as to what he wears? “Well Salman does wear formals too but yes, he loves to wear casuals, especially T-shirt and jeans. And he loves to experiment with his jeans. I have burnt, cut, painted and done what not with his jeans. I have done everything under the sun to give them different looks. And he looks good in all of them,” says Ashley.
Talking about how easy or difficult it is to style for Salman, going by the perception that he is not easy to handle, Ashley laughs, “It’s a misconception. He is the easiest person to work with when it comes to styling. When I am making a sensible request he listens to me. His sister Alvira and I work together for his styling.”
During his lectures, students were inquisitive to know more about the life of a stylist. “Most of them are fascinated about behind-the-scenes stuff; what do the celebrities eat? How long do they workout for? About their personal lives, and the prospect of designing for stars.” He smiles and adds, “I replied to all their questions, but also updated them about how they should explore and market themselves and reach out to people. The most important thing is to start from scratch, not hope to style a celebrity right in the first project.”
About the kind of money an establishing designer makes, Ashley says, “Celebrity styling is definitely picking up. Like for example, my assistants make approximately '60,000 per month plus allowances. And a budding designer can make around '2 lakh and above in Mumbai.”
Salman’s looks in various films like Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, etc. and in the reality show Bigg Boss 7 have been styled by Ashley Rebello. Not just that, Ashley has styled for T-town stars like Tamanna and Mahesh Babu and wishes to explore this industry more.
