Gujarat riots: Supreme Court praises SIT probe
New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Thursday praised the Special Investigation Team probing the cases pertaining to the 2002 Gujarat riots for progress made in investigation.
“A lot of progress has been achieved. The report says out of nine cases monitored by the court, investigation in six cases is over, resulting in conviction. And the rest of the three cases are in the final stages,” a bench of justices H.L. Dattu, Ranjana Prakash Desai and M.Y. Eqbal said.
The remarks came after the bench examined a status report submitted by the SIT, that was set up by the top court under former CBI chief R.K. Raghavan in 2008.
The apex court is monitoring the investigation. The SC had set up a SIT to probe certain cases pertaining to the riots after the NHRC and many NGOs alleged that the investigation was shoddy.
