New Delhi: Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh managed to steal the limelight from the on-going polls with his love story that went public on Wednesday, after photos of him and his much younger girlfriend, TV journalist Amrita Rai, were leaked online.
But far from being embarrassed, Mr Singh bravely admitted to the affair by tweeting, “I have no hesitation in accepting my relationship with Amrita Rai. She and her husband have already filed a mutual consent divorce case. Once that is decided, we would formalise our relationship. But I do condemn encroachment in our private life.”
Ms Rai, a senior reporter with Rajya Sabha TV, also hit out at critics on Twitter. She said that she had separated from her husband and had filed mutual consent divorce papers. “After which I have decided to marry Digvijay Singh,” she added.
Amrita was extremely upset about the manner in which the relationship was made public. She said her email account was hacked and the contents in her computer too were tampered with. While the politician and journo have handled the “scandal” with grace, people are still curious about when the love story started.
Singh lost his wife to cancer last year. While nobody is able to verify exactly when the couple met, sources say it was their love for poetry that brought them together a couple of years ago. Apparently, Singh’s children, too, knew about the affair and have no objections.
But the affair has already taken a conspiracy angle with members of the Congress claiming the BJP was behind Rai’s computer being hacked as Singh had once commented against Narendra Modi’s marital status saying, “I am a widower and if I remarry I won’t hide like your Dear Feku!”
