TRS, Congress in a neck to neck race to win local body elections
Hyderabad: As results continued to pour in on Tuesday night, the TRS gave a much better performance than it did in the municipal polls in Telangana. It has won a majority of ZPTC and MPTC seats, besides bagging three Zilla Parishads of Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizambad.
In the TRS bastion, Karimnagar district, out of the 57 ZPTCs, the party won 41, the Congress 14 and the Telugu Desam and others bagged one each.
Out of the 52 ZPTCs in Adilabad district, the TRS won 31, getting an absolute majority. In Nizamabad district, out of the 36 ZPTCs, the TRS won 24 seats and the Congress, 12.
The TRS won the three Zilla Parishads of Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizambad with a considerable majority and was on a winning streak in a few others.
The Congress gave a tough fight in both ZPTC and MPTC in Telangana. Due to the use of ballot papers instead of EVMs, the counting has been slow and the results considerably delayed.
“We are extremely happy with the results so far. In fact, it’s beyond our expectations,” Dr K. Kesava Rao, TRS secretary-general, told Deccan Chronicle.
TRS politburo member and former TRS Floor leader Etela Rajender too expressed satisfaction over the results. “We will bag six to seven Zilla Parishads. The TRS has a majority of MPTCs and ZPTCs across Telangana. It indicates public confidence in the TRS. This winning streak will continue in the Assembly and LS elections too.” The TRS is confident of winning Medak, Warangal, Ranga Reddy and Mahbubnagar Zilla Parishads too.
Major political personalities of all parties, however, received a rude shock in their own strongholds.
In TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s native village Chintamadaka in Siddipet mandal, TRS nominee Devamma won the mandal seat with a thumping majority, but the Telugu Desam held Gajwel, which forms part of the Gajwel Assembly constituency from where Mr Rao has contested in the Assembly polls.

In Gajwel ZPTC, TD’s Venkatesh won by 1,000 votes. The TD also won in 10 municipal wards.
TPCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah lost ground in Jangaon and his native village Kilaspur, where the TD candidates won. Another former minister and Naraspur MLA Sunita Laxma Reddy too lost ground to the TD in her native Gomaram village while the Shivampet ZPTC was won by the TRS. Union minister Balaram Naik lost ground in his native Madapalli village in Warangal district where the TRS won.
