A preliminary discussion on the concept paper for the Golden Quadralateral rail project has been held in the Planning Commisison. Sources said that the officials are preparing notes on feasibility and financial costs to execute the project. Roughly, officials said, the cost could be anywhere about Rs 2 lakh crore.
The report on the high speed elevated rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai on which railways is seeking to run India’s first bullet train is also expected in four months time.
“Dedicated Freight Corridor, Ludhiana to Kolkata and Dadri to Mumbai will start becoming operational in phased manner from 2017 onwards. Once the DFC rolls out, lots of rail tracks will be de-congested to allow the railways to run semi-high speed or high speed trains on certain routes. It needs to be seen if we can work on the exisiting tracks or need to build new tracks,” said a senior official.
