Assembly turns conference hall
Chennai: The erstwhile assembly hall that can house nearly 500 people at Omandurar Estate has been put to use to hold international medical conferences to enrich and share experts’ knowledge among medicos.
The newly inaugurated multi-super speciality hospital will host a national workshop on ‘Advanced management of thyroid disorders’ on Thursday. Speaking about the workshop, nodal officer Dr Ramesh Mahalingam said the workshops are to create awareness among people.
World Thyroid Day was observed on May 25 and the workshop is being organised to educate people on early detection of thyroid and the deadly duo of tuberculosis and thyroid dysfunction.
“Dr Anshu Rajneesh Sharma, senior consultant and head, department of nuclear medicine Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Research Institute, Mumbai and Dr A. Velumani, chairman of Thyrocare Technologies in Navi Mumbai and other specialists will speak on the current understanding of the anatomy and the molecular dynamics of the thyroid gland among others,” said Dr Ramalingam.
Doctors said thyroid diseases hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are relatively common in pregnancy and important to treat. “Not many are aware about this condition and it’s extremely important to create awareness among people. The hospital will hold many such workshops and continuing medical education programmes that will benefit not only doctors but also students who are pursuing MBBS and other specialities,” said director of medical education Dr S. Geethalakshmi.
Health secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan will release Indian guidelines for management of thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidemias (an abnormal amount of lipids in the blood) at the workshop.
Doctors at the multi-super speciality hospital said as more than 500 people could participate in the workshop, plans were on to call international faculty and conduct many such medical programmes.
