Beas tragedy: Missing student bodies, big worry

Only 5 retrieved, experts fear bodies might be stuck in silt

Hyderabad: Failure of search teams to retrieve the bodies of the city students who were washed away in the Beas River in Himachal Pradesh is now the biggest concern for the authorities and parents.

Till Tuesday, two-and-a-half days since the 24 students drowned in the river, only five bodies were retrieved. It is feared that the bodies might be stuck in silt and mud in the riverbed and between rocks.

Officials are now waiting for the bodies to float up in the reservoir. Rescue teams, along with divers and rafters, have been scouring the river for signs of the missing students and the tour guide but in vain.

Telangana principal secretary (revenue) B.R. Meena, said, “The bodies are stuck between the rocks and in the silt. The Pandoh dam is situated 16 km from the mishap site. We hope that the bodies are in this area. Even those stuck in the silt may float from Wednesday,”

He added that around 500 people from various agencies like the ITBP, SSB, National Disaster Response Force, Army and the local police were working at the mishap site. While parents at the site demanded officials to use advanced technology like remote sensing and high-resolution cameras to spot the bodies, the latter said that they would be of little use.
