Don’t change power deals, Centre tells Andhra Pradesh

Controversy comes at a time when relations between two states are strained

Hyderabad: Putting an end to the controversy over the cancellation of power purchase agreements (PPAs), the Centre late on Wednesday dashed off a letter to the Andhra Pradesh government asking it not to make any changes with regard to the existing PPAs or the allocation of power to Telangana.

The letter signed by Power System Operation Corporation Ltd executive director P.R. Raghuram noted, “AP State Load Despatch Centre is advised to continue with the existing scheduling procedure as in force since June 2, 2014, in conformation with the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, until such time the clarification is obtained from the ministry of power. The matter may be expedited for avoiding operational difficulties in real-time grid operation.”

The Telangana government threatened to hit back over the AP government’s decision to cancel PPAs that were entered into by the united state. It even indirectly threatened to cut power supply to AP government establishments located in Hyderabad such as the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, Secretariat, Ministers’ Quarters and MLAs’ Quarters.

The fresh controversy comes at a time when relations between the two states are already strained over the Polavaram project and the fee reimbursement issues.
