Dumpsite to come up in Banashankari?
Bengaluru: Civic Amenity (CA) sites are normally used to build parks, playgrounds or any other public utility service areas.
But, the BBMP is planning to convert a CA site stretching to around 9.15 acres at Banashanakari 6th stage, 5th block near Lingadheeranahalli into a landfill to dump waste generated in the Rajarajeshwarinagar zone, which comprises three assembly constituencies, said Jayaram Gowda, a resident of Lingadheeranahalli.
He told Deccan Chronicle that originally, the land located in the middle of 30,000 BDA sites proposed get a regional office of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
“We have seen what BBMP has done to Mavallipura and Mandur. We do not want this pristine BDA layout to be converted into a stinking landfill. We have no objection for dumping waste generated in our area, provided it is processed scientifically,” he said.
“If the landfill is allowed in the area, groundwater and Vrishabhavathy Valley will be contaminated. The BBMP has not taken the residents into confidence. Members of the Banashankari 6th Stage Resident Welfare Association will move court and get a stay on the project. The BBMP is planning to set up waste processing units in constituencies represented by Congress MLAs to ensure that no protests take place. Already, people in Tumkur, Magadi and Chintamani have protested against setting up landfills,” he added.
Instead, the BBMP can build concrete slabs over storm water drains and used the space for dumping waste, he suggested. The BBMP authorities confirmed that the segregation units will have concrete floors, to avoid contamination of groundwater, and compound walls.
