Most techies to miss survey

Many living alone are confused and don’t want to hand over their details to neighbours

Hyderabad: None of the 1,281 registered IT companies in Telangana State have declared a holiday for the Intensive Housing Survey 2014 scheduled for August 19 stating that their employees have to work as per their clients’ requirement.

Several IT companies are unaware of the fact that the household survey is also being conducted in Hyderabad. Company managements have sent out mails to their employees stating that the survey is not being conducted in Hyderabad and that is why it is a working day.

Except for those who have evening shifts, none of the IT workers, around 3.23 lakh of them, will be a part of the survey.

Despite the TS government declaring August 19 as a state holiday, IT companies are demanding a minimum of 40 per cent attendance instead of declaring a holiday on that day, said the employees.

While family members of some of the employees will be able to furnish the required details, those who live alone don not know whom to submit the necessary documents to.

Apart from the IT employees, around 8.5 lakh indirect IT employees (local support staff) will also miss the survey.

The TS IT association has requested the TS government to conduct another survey, only for the employees, during the weekend or issue an order directing all IT companies to remain closed on August 19.

Sandeep Kumar Makthala, founder and president of TS IT Association (TITA) said, “As per a NASSCOM report, one direct IT employee will need three to four support staff (security personnel, backhand staff, drivers, housekeeping and canteen staff). The total head count of IT employees for the year 2013-14 is 3,23 691 employees in Telangana State and 8.5 to 10 lakh support staff including all departments. Several employees are from different districts of Telangana and neighboring states, who live with a group of employees or alone. While those residing with families will be able to furnish the details, many living alone are confused and don’t want to hand over their details to neighbours or friends.”

That apart, most of the support staff are white-card holders and require state benefits. But since no holiday has been declared even the indirect IT employees have to work.
