Telangana Pre-survey: GHMC strikes gold
GHMC will receive '100 to '200 crore more tax this year
Hyderabad: The pre-visit for the Intensive Household Survey on Sunday proved to be a jackpot for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Water Board and the Electricity Board as 2.06 lakh new houses (non-tax payers) were identified, especially in the peripheral areas of Greater Hyderabad. The municipal corporation will receive '100 to '200 crore more tax this year as a result of this exercise. Those who have been paying residential tax instead of commercial tax will fall under the net as well.
As per the 2013 survey, the highest number of defaulters was from Circle 4 (Charminar) areas like Old Malakpet, Saidabad, Chandrayangutta, Uppuguda, Rein Bazar and Barkas. This was followed by Circle 5 areas like Puranapul, Shah Ali Banda, Begum Bazar, Falaknuma and Hussaini Alam and Circle VII (Khairatabad) areas like Mangalhat, Tolichowki, Asifnagar, Mehdipatnam and Chintalbasthi.
In 2013 around 2 lakh owners had not paid property tax for over five years. There are over 20,000 defaulters in LB Nagar, Malkajgiri, Kukatpally and Circle 10 (Khairatabad) who owe the GHMC hundreds of crores of rupees.
Also, there are over 1 lakh illegal water connections in Greater Hyderabad, thousands of which are in the three surrounding municipalities of Malkajgiri, LB Nagar and Kukatpally. If a consumer does not have a Consumer Account Number (CAN), then it is an illegal connection. The Water Board supplies 340 million gallons of water in the city but gets paid for only 210 MGD. About 40 per cent water is unaccounted for. The Board can also attach the properties of defaulters under the Revenue Recovery Act.
GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said, “After the completion of the survey, within 15 days a detailed database will be created using NIC software. Based on the information provided, citizens will be entitled for various proposed state schemes.”
