Slain militant belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba: Army

One soldier, who was injured in the encounter and airlifted to Base Hospital here

Srinagar: Following A gunbattle between the army and suspected islamic militans in Kalaroos area of Kas-hmir’s Kupwara, the army called in reinforcements, who launched a massive operation in the area, 95 km northwest of Srinagar, for the remaining militants who are believed to have escaped.

The sources said the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained. One soldier, Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh, who was injured in the encounter and airlifted to Base Hospital here, succumbed. Another soldier was injured in the clash.

A defence spokesman said that the troops had laid an ambush in Kalaroos area Saturday after getting information about militants. Contact with the militants was established Sunday, and they were asked to surrender.

The spokesperson belie-ved the slain militants were believed to be affiliated to Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.
