Vijayawada loses the race for Andhra Pradesh capital
Hyderabad: The Centre-appointed Sivaramakrishna Committee has rejected the location of capital in and around Vijayawada-Guntur stating it will have long-term economic and environmental consequences.
The committee suggested three regions, Vizag zone comprising VUDA areas from Srikakulam to Kakinada; Rayalaseema Arc with Kurnool and Anantapur; and Srikalahasti “spine” for locating capital buildings and institutions.

It further said that the location of the capital in Vijayawada and Guntur will have adverse effect on other areas in the state.
The committee report said, “There are no significant traits of land in Krishna and Guntur districts which are uncultivated or degraded forest lands. Only Mangalgiri and Gannavaram have small contiguous parcels of lands.

It is learnt that 200 acres of land is made available for AIIMS. The land in Gannavaram comprises of only a few acres in Kondapavuluru and Vedurpavuluru which have been quarried extensively and required rehabilitation before use,” the committee opined. The committee also explored the sites adjoining the river.
