Young Minon John has never been to school, nor is he a trained artiste or actor
Young Actor Minon John
Kochi:Once in a while comes along a child actor who brings a tour de force in their maiden attempt that can put even seasoned actors to shame. Minon John won a National Award for the Best Child Artiste in his very first film 101 Chodyangal.
He followed it up with a very natural performance in the recent film Munnariyippu starring Mammootty, which has been widely appreciated. The fourteen-year-old is extraordinarily gifted, is wise beyond his years, and has philosophies that transcend his age. Before gaining recognition as an actor, Minon was already known as a gifted artist.
Talking about Munnariyippu, Minon says, “It is a very touching film and the dialogues are connected but above all, I got the opportunity to work with Venu sir and Unni sir.” On working with Mammootty, Minon admits, “When you act opposite a legendary actor, obviously one is tense but he has the amazing quality to put you at ease and give useful tips.”
While revealing that films happened by accident, Minon claims he has king-size dreams to be a director like Venu. He candidly states, “I have dreams which may or may not come true, but direction and art are a priority. I have held more than 80 painting exhibitions across India, so that dream has been partly realised. I want to become a writer like Paulo Coelho.”
This self-taught boy has never attended a formal school and has gathered his wisdom from his experiences, travels, books and interactions with family and friends. He takes classes on art for college students, and on environment for B.Ed and MBA students.
Giving credit to his parents John Baby and Mini, both artists, for never forcing him to attend school, Minon says, “Just because I do not attend school does not mean that I advocate the same for others! I had basic education and then decided not to go to school. Education is the path to reach your goal and people constantly ask me if I don’t need certificates to land a job!”
Minon will be seen in a prominent role in the upcoming film Lal Bahadur Shastri. “I go to the sets with a blank mind! One can attend acting classes but leave those lessons at home when you act; on the sets, what the director wants is all that matters. This philosophy got me my award despite being a novice in acting!”
