Injured Jwala out of Asian Games

Jwala pulls out of the Asian games due to knee injury
New Delhi: Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medallists Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will not be seen in action at the Incheon Asian Games, after the former pulled out of the upcoming event because of a knee injury. “It’s just a sprain to my right knee and I have been advised to rest for the next 10 days. I was feeling the pain since the World Championship, but on Monday I sprained it,” Jwala told this paper on Wednesday.
“I am sad that I won’t be in Incheon with my team. This is perhaps for the first time that I am forced to skip a major tournament. The decision was tough, but important. I hope Ashwini will understand.”The one who stands to suffer the most is Ashwini, whose mixed doubles’ partner Tarun Kona is already out of the Asiad squad. Kona was one of the four shuttlers, besides Aparna Balan, Rituparna Das and Arun Vishnu, who were axed from the final Asian Games’ athletes list announced by the sports ministry on Tuesday.
“It’s sad and disappointing. But first of all, I want Jwala to get better. This can happen to anyone. I just want her to recover from her injury soon,” Ashwini said. She now has to wait for national coach Pullela Gopichand’s decision on her partners in the women’s and mixed doubles.
