Hyderabad Metro faces traffic, Civic department roadblock

Since the new state has been formed, even a simple permission, has become a bone of contention
Hyderabad: The ‘Right to Work’ certificate is not being issued to the L&T by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the traffic police — to start the work on the Metro rail along the Panjagutta-Khairtabad, Khairtabad-Lakdikapul and Nampally-Gandhi Bhavan stretches.
As a result, the work is not going on as per schedule and the corridor from Miyapur to LB Nagar is being affected. Ever since the new Telangana State government has been formed, even a simple permission, which was earlier easy to acquire, has become a bone of contention, said some officers.
According to senior officials at the L&T, “The GHMC was to acquire the land, widen it and hand it over to us. That is not happening due to many technical issues, and we are now being given space along the carriage way. However, even in this case, the GHMC and traffic department are giving the ‘Right to Work’ certificate. Why are the government agencies not co-operating with the project? Everything was progressing properly, but in the past three months we have hit a roadblock.”
Completion of the Miyapur-LB Nagar corridor will make life a lot easier for Hyderabadis. Comm-uting time is expected to drastically come down. A fortnight ago, senior officers of L&T and Hyderabad Metro Rail managing director N.V.S. Reddy had a meeting with the Telangana Chief Minister. K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
Chief secretary Rajiv Sharma said, “A co-ordination committee of all the agencies involved has been formed. A weekly review will be held. Wherever there are glitches, they will be fixed.”
According to sources, there has been a proposal to convert the Raj Bhavan Road, Necklace Road and the road near the Assembly into one-way roads so that the traffic moves smoothly and also Metro work is carried out easily during the day. Currently, Metro work goes on only at night.
S.K. Joshi, principal secretary of municipalities in the state, said, “We are going to opt for a result-oriented and practical approach to ensure that all the problems faced by the project are resolved.”
