Women fast at MGR memorial
Over 100 members of the women’s wing of the AIADMK staged a sit-in fast near the MGR memorial at Marina beach on Sunday, condemning the conviction of former chief minister Jayalalithaa who has been lodged in a prison at Bengaluru.
The protestors, who were led by AIADMK women’s wing leader Saraswathi Rangaswami, claimed that they would continue their fast until Ms Jayalalithaa was released.
The women, most of whom had covered their mouths with black ribbons, claimed that the verdict sentencing Jayalalithaa to four years’ imprisonment was cruel and completely unjust.
“It is extremely unfair and a conspiracy by the Opposition and Centre that our leader has received such a harsh verdict. We will continue our fast until she is released from prison,” said one of the protestors.
As the protest gathered momentum, several AIADMK partymen also thronged the venue and joined the group of protestors.
