Hudhud: Global space bodies to give satellite pics

International satellites will be asked to provide high resolution images
Hyderabad: The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) will enlist the support of the international space agencies for satellite imagery post the Cyclone Hudhud, to assess the damage and pinpoint locations. All international satellites passing over the Visakhapatnam region will be asked to provide high resolution images and other data they pick up to the local authorities through the NRSC. This is in addition to the four Isro satellites that will provide imagery.
Andhra Pradesh government officials said NRSC will activate the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters on Monday and immediately start receiving data. The charter was recently activated for tracking the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was informed by NRSC officials that the charter will be activated eliciting support from international agencies. “When activated, we will get images from satellites belonging to 13 different space agencies. Whenever they are over the region, they will have to acquire and share images and data,” said Parakala Prabhakar, media advisor to AP government. The international agencies can provide resolution images to the order of 0.5 to 0.2 metres.
