Visakhapatnam: The power failure has forced all hospitals in the city, known as a medical tourism hub to shift to generators to maintain critical facilities. But the lack of power was truly biting. “Nothing works without power,” a police officer pointed out.
Andhra University, colleges, schools and other educational institutions have declared holidays for the next 15 days due to water and power shortage. As the day wore on, the patience of the people appeared to thin out.
With no cellphones and no entertainment, Vizag appeared to be back in the ages. But there was a message of hope. A user posted on Facebook: “We are a CITY of STEEL, and our “STEEL” DETERMINATION cannot be shattered.”
Meanwhile, the South Central Railway is operating two special trains from Hyderabad to Kakinada and from Tirupati to Tuni to clear the rush of stranded passengers. Several trains were cancelled on Monday even as the route has now opened up. Officials are hopeful of resuming all services by Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, railway tracks at a few locations were damaged due to the impact of the cyclone.
24 tonnes food packs Airlifted to Vizag
District administration officials have sent food packets in four helicopters and one chartered flight to Visakhapatnam. District collector M. Raghunandana Rao said 24 tonnes of food packets and milk packets were air-lifted from the Gannavaram airport.
He said 24 teams too were sent to Visakhapatnam for participation in relief operations and another 40 teams are ready to leave for the cyclone ravaged areas.
The officials had prepared 30,000 food packets for supply to cyclone victims in Visakhapatnam. Meanwhile Telugu Desam leaders, including Krishnababu, also sent 30,000 food packets to Cyclone-ravaged Visakhapatnam.
