Digvijay Singh favours Rahul Gandhi for Congress president post, earns ire

Rahul loyalists are rooting for him to take charge as Congress president
New Delhi: Ahead of the organisational elections, and after repeated batterings in electoral politics, the Congress seems divided over whether Sonia Gandhi should continue to lead the party for the next five years or should her son, Mr Rahul Gandhi, take over as Congress president.
The division over the question is clearly perceptible and was highlighted again by Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh’s remarks on Saturday that the time has come for Rah-ul Gandhi to take charge from his mother. The party described the remarks as his “personal views”.
According to a CWC member, Mr Singh’s statement shows a ‘no confidence’ in Mrs Gandhi. “He can share his views with both Soniaji and Rahulji. He can meet them any time. But airing his views openly is nothing but to project oneself as more loyal than the king”.
While Rahul loyalists are rooting for him to take charge as Congress president, the other section wants Mrs Gandhi to continue. Their argument is, “Mrs Gandhi is the only leader who can boost the morale of the party.” The election to pick the next Congress chief is expected in July-August next year.
