Vijayawada zone students hope for liberal dress code

The 60-year-old Andhra Loyola College imposed a dress code last year

Vijayawada: Students in Vijayawada hoping that being in the capital would create a more cosmopolitan ambience in their colleges with the relaxation of dress code are all set to be proven wrong. They would have to continue following a dress code.

Many renowned colleges in the education hub of Andhra Pradesh have a list of what students can and cannot wear. This includes the 35 engineering colleges in the district.

“It is not that colleges need to allow students to wear something that is not acceptable in society. Students should have the freedom to wear what they like but with certain rules so that they learn to dress professionally, which is required for multinational companies,” said S. Surya Sujan, an MBA student.

“Now that we are now in the state capital, we hope our college brings in changes by giving liberties to students in certain aspects,” said engineering student Ch. Chaitanya.
But there is also the other side. “Students are always expected to come in decent clothes to the classrooms. When that is not done, colleges are forced to impose dress codes,” said a professor on the condition of anonymity.

The 60-year-old Andhra Loyola College imposed a dress code last year for the first time in its history. A top engineering college also did the same but owing to protests by the students, it was made mandatory only for freshers.
