Dropped at a time I was topping averages: VVS Laxman
Former Indian cricketer felt that Greg Chappell was not fair to him
Hyderabad: VVS Laxman felt former Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell was not fair to him even as he was the most consistent during his tenure.“I was dropped and Yuvraj was played ahead of me in a match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2006,” Laxman told this newspaper.
“And to think that this happened at a time when I was looking at a statistical account published in a newspaper of all players after Chappell had taken over as coach that placed me as the second highest aggregate scorer and one with the highest average was disheartening,” the hurt Hyderabad player added.
Laxman said he was not the only one targeted. “Such incidents were happening in the team. The atmosphere in the dressing room was not the same.”Laxman said things almost got out of hand during India’s tour of South Africa in 2006. “It was terrible. Leading into a practice match, there was a lot of tension in the team and the players actually decided to get down together and thrash it out. The only issue was how to deal with Chappell for it would be us and not the coach who would represent the country.”
