Timeline of accidents involving naval vessels and submarines since 2013
Mumbai: The Indian Navy has seen a spate of accidents involving its vessels and submarines in the last couple of years. Some of them have caused casualties. The accidents have time and again brought up the question of safety of the ageing fleet.
Here is a timeline of the various accidents sice 2013.
November 6, 2014: Torpedo Recovery Vessel of the Astravahini class sinks off Visakhapatnam coast.
October 31, 2014: INS Kora scraps a merchant navy vessel.
Aug 14 2013: Fire detected on board INS Sindhurakshak , caused death of three officers, 15 sailors.
May 9, 2014: INS Ganga suffered minor explosion.
March 8 2014: One civilian killed in under construction nuclear submarine in Vizag.
March 7 2014: Toxic gas leak in INS Kolkata leading to death of one commander.
February 26, 2014: Fire detected in INS Sindhuratna off Mumbai coast.
February, 3 2014: INS Airavat ran aground in Vizag.
January 2014: INS Sindhughosh ran aground at naval harbour in Mumbai.
January 23, 2014: INS Vipul was detected with a hole in its pillar compartment and sent back to Mumbai harbour.
January, 22 2014: INS Betwa ran aground and collided with unidentified object at Mumbai naval base.
December 2013: INS Tarkash - A stealth frigate which conducted several overseas missions, INS Tarkash suffered damage to its hull when it hit the jetty while docking at the Mumbai. There were no casualties.
December 23, 2013: INS Talwar - A fishing trawler sank after colliding with the frontline frigate near Ratnagiri district, injuring four of the 27 people aboard the trawler. The trawler was operating without lights. There were no causalties onboard the ship.
December 4, 2013 INS Konkan- A minesweeper of the Eastern Naval Command, the vessel caught fire at the naval dockyard at Visakhapatnam while undergoing repairs. The fire engulfed much of the ship's interiors before it was doused. No deaths were reported.
September 2013, INS Viraat - Fire broke out near the officer's mess of the aircraft carrier off the Mumbai coast. No casualties were reported.
