Uber cabs does no vetting for cabbies
New Delhi: While it was believed that cab drivers for Uber services are verified, Saturday’s rape incident revealed that forced by the rising demand for high-end cab services, most drivers are being hired without proper background check.
The service, which makes cabs available within a few minutes of request, has recently been facing shortage of drivers. Initially cab drivers had to give documents in order to start working. But now, a cab driver registered with Uber, said that the only document required was a driver’s license. “Most of us were hired the same day,” he said.
Neha Panwar, a fashion stylist, working in Delhi said, “I have been using Uber’s services regularly. I always felt it was safe. The ID card of the driver made it seem that drivers are verified. It is very easy to book. But I am shocked that such an incident took place in it.”
