Separate bus tracks to ease traffic: Experts
Hyderabad: Road safety experts suggest that a separate track for buses will be an ideal solution to solve the increasing road mishaps and traffic congestion caused by RTC buses. They point out Ahmedabad’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRTS) as a successful model. If planned scientifically this model can be successful in select routes in the city,
Another solution is to change their casual attitude towards driving. Experts said that it is high time the government improved the public transport system in Hyderabad. Introducing BRTS can be considered an important step in this direction. The service, which is included under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, has a separate bus bays for buses. Apart from Gujarat, Pune, Delhi and Jaipur has this system.
“We have only 9% of land for roads in Hyderabad while it should be 20%. It might be difficult to allocate special lanes for buses,” said Jay Rao from the RTC.
However, road safety experts differ. “For metro rail, the state took over 300 acres and spend Rs 200 crore for each km. For BRTS, the expenses would be far less,” said road safety expert and Vaada Foundation president P. Suresh Kumar.
Meanwhile, RTC officials claimed that the department is conducting weekly programmes for drivers, and also incentives to drivers with accident free careers to encourage them to be responsible.
