India takes up issue of 77 workers with Sri Lankan company

The workers involved in the dispute are reportedly mostly from UP and Bihar

New Delhi: India has taken up with a Sri Lankan company the issue of 77 Indians involved in a labour dispute in that country.

"It is a labour-related issue. Our mission has already taken up the matter with the company and we are working on a solution and hopeful of a resolution by tomorrow," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

He was replying to a question on whether Indians were being held hostage in Sri Lanka.

The workers involved in the dispute are reportedly mostly from UP and Bihar. They have also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, seeking their intervention to resolve the matter.
