Islamabad: Pakistani media today gave extensive coverage to US President Barack Obama's visit to India, highlighting the breakthrough in the civil nuclear deal and renewal of a 10-year defence cooperation between the two countries.
Obama arrived in New Delhi on Sunday and in a departure from protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received him at the airport.
In a front page lead, Dawn reported that nuclear agreement was reached "to end the deadlock on their six-year-old civilian nuclear power agreement".
The two countries had signed landmark civilian nuclear deal in 2008.
The News in its front page headline - 'Atomic energy deal: US accedes to Indian demands' - reported that it was a much anticipated breakthrough on the commercial implementation of their landmark agreement, the two countries enter "a new strategic phase of co-production of some defence projects".
The paper also noted that Obama declared that India was a trustworthy partner in Afghanistan. The Nation newspaper carried the story of nuclear deal and visit of Obama as first lead on its front page.
It reported that the two countries identified terrorism as a major threat and that there should be no distinction between the terrorist groups.
The Express Tribune, another major newspaper, reported that apart from breaking the impasse on the nuclear deal, the two countries also extended their existing defence cooperation pact for another 10 years.
