WC 2015 IRE vs UAE: When a Pakistan cricketer fires, for a different team

Shaiman Anwar – originally from Sialkot – slams maiden WC ton for Emiratis

Mumbai: At a time when Pakistan cricket team is limping in the ICC World Cup 2015, a fellow Pakistani-origin cricketer – playing for United Arab Emirates – turned heads during their Pool B encounter against Ireland in Brisbane on Wednesday. Shaiman Anwar became the first to score a World Cup hundred (106) for his country.

The batsman, who is reported to have followed Rahul Dravid’s technique in his teens, tasted success at a very old age. He is 35. But the best part about Anwar is he can improvise, give him any position to bat.

A star in UAE’s domestic circuit, he is also known to be a big-hitter. No wonder his century came off 79 balls and at a time when the Emiratis were struggling at 78 for four.

His innings comprised 10 boundaries and a six.

However, the right-handed batsman started his cricket in his native place – Sialkot in Pakistan – and participated in domestic tournaments. But he moved to UAE for better employment opportunities.

Even in the match against Zimbabwe, Anwar had scored a 50-ball 67 with nine fours and a six.

The team from Gulf will next face Team India on February 28 in Perth.
