The son of deceased parents was addicted to betting
Guntur: In a shocking incident, a youth’s addiction to betting on cricket matches drove his parents to suicide on Thursday at Murikipudi village in Chilakaluripeta mandal of Guntur district.
Ch. Haribabu, a farmer and Nagendramma, housewife consumed pesticides after their repeated pleas to their son Srihari not to waste money on betting on cricket matches. This only resulted in him getting angry and beating them up. Heartbroken by Srihari’s behaviour, the couple took the extreme step.
According to reports, Srihari had in the past few days had bet heavily on the cricket matches being played as part of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and lost money.
On Wednesday night, Srihari demanded mroe money to place bets on the semifinal between India and Australia. As Srihari had lost money on the Pakistan-New Zealand match, his parents refused. Angry over the refusal, Srihari beat up Haribabu and Nagendramma and left home.
On Thursday morning, some farmers noticed the bodies of Haribabu, 53, and Nagendramma, 45, lying in a farm and informed their relatives.
Chilakaluripeta police led by inspector Dilip Kumar shifted the bodies to the government hospital for autopsy after conducting an inquest.
