Salman Khan 2002 hit-and-run case: Timeline

If convicted today, the actor could face up to 10 years in jail

Mumbai: On September 28, 2002 in the wee hours of the morning, a Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly driven by Salman Khan under the influence of alcohol rammed into a bakery in Bandra killing one and injuring four others. More than 25 witnesses have been examined by the prosecution, whereas the defence has examined only one witness during the trial.

Here’s a timeline of everything that has happened in the case:

28 September 2002

Salman’s Khan white Toyota Land Cruiser rams The American Express Bakery in Bandra West close to his residence Galaxy Apartment, killing one pavement dweller, and injuring 4 others.

7 October 2002

The actor surrenders to the police in Bandra and is arrested under the Motor Vehicles and Bombay Prohibition Act. The actor then secured bail from a Sessions Court in Mumbai on October 24.

21 October 2002

Charge-sheet is filed in Bandra magistrate’s court, invokes Section 304 –II of the IPC, which attracts upto 10 years in prison.

May 2003

The Session Court rejects the actor’s application challenging the use of Section 304-II. In June, Salman appeals in the Bombay High Court, which concluded that the actor should not be charged with culpable homicide.

October 2003

The state challenges HC order in the Supreme Court, rules that the magistrate should decide on charges.

October 2006

Bandra Magistrate’s court frames charges against Salman Khan. He will be tried for rash driving.

May 2007

Chemical Analysis report suggests the actor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap.

October 2007

Prime witness and Police bodyguard of the actor, who was present in the vehicle at the time of the mishap Ravindra Patil dies of tuberculosis. Patil had filed the first FIR against the actor.

December 2012

Bandra magistrate’s court rules that Salman will be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the Sessions Court.

March 2013

Actor files application for order to be revised with the Sessions court.

July 2013

Salman is charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder by the Mumbai Sessions Court. The court then ordered for the actor to be tried again in December with evidence from the witnesses who had deposed before the magistrate.

April 2014

First witness in the hearing,Samba Gowda deposes in court.

June 2014

Three of the four injured victims depose in court, and identify the actor. One victim stated that he saw Salman exit the vehicle from the driver’s side.

July 2014

Mumbai Police tells court the case diary along with 55 of the 63 case related documents are missing.

December 2014

Chemical Analyst Bala Shankar deposes in court saying blood sample of actor had tested positive for alcohol.

27 March 2015 : alman deposes for the first time in court, claims driver Ashok Singh was behind the wheel at the time of mishap.

30 March 2015: Ashok Singh admits to the court that he was driving the car and not the actor during the time of the accident.

7 April 2015: Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat closes his case against Salman, calls Ashok Singh is a liar and should be tried for perjury.

20 April 2015 : Defence lawyer Shrikant Shivade argues against prosecution charges. Sessions judge D W Deshpande pronounces May 6 as the date for verdict.

The court will pronounce its verdict on Wednesday in the hit-and-run case against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan who, if convicted, could face upto 10 years in jail. The judgement in the over 12-year-old case, whose trial saw many twists and turns, can make or mar the career of the actor on whom ride investments of over Rs 200 crore.
A tight security blanket will be thrown around the court when sessions judge D W Deshpande pronounces the judgement on Wednesday. Only the lawyers, media and the court staff will be allowed to be present. While fixing May 6 for delivering the verdict last month, Deshpande had directed the 49-year-old actor to be present at 11.15 am.
6 May 2015 : Salman Khan is convicted of all charges, including culpable homicide and sentenced to 5 years in jail. He gets interim bail for two days.

8 May 2015 : Bombay High Court suspends his 5-year sentence and grants him bail pending his appeal against conviction.

7 September 2015: High Court rejects paper book, orders it to be prepared afresh

21 September 2015: Justice A R Joshi commences daily hearing of Salman Khan appeal

17 November 2015: Defence counsel Amit Desai wraps up its case

30 November 2015: Court rejects defence plea to examine Kamaal Khan as court witness

3 December 2015: Government pleader and chief public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde wraps up case

4 December 2015: Judge A R Joshi posts appeal for dictation of verdict from December 7

7 December 2015: Judge begins dictation of verdict.

10 December 2015: Salman acquitted of all charges in the case.
