Box of horror: Live beetles found in Nestle Cerelac tin!
Coimbatore: The multinational brand Nestle is deeper in the mess now. After the discovery of excessive lead content in Maggi noodles in many places across the country and a tin of its baby milk powder Nan Pro coming under the scanner for live worms, a packet of its infant food Cerelac, which was brought to the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, was found to contain a lot of weevils (type of carnivorous beetles).
Software professional Sriram had purchased the product from a medical store in the city. Just as she opened the packet, his wife was shocked to find weevils in the Cerelac. Sriram lodged a complaint with the department of Food Safety on Tuesday. He had bought the packet for his one-year-old son on Sunday. His wife had opened the packet on Monday to find weevils creeping around.
He checked the manufacturing date and expiry date to find if it was old stock, but the manufacturing date printed on the packet read February 2015 and the expiry date was February 2016.
The food safety department registered a complaint and ordered testing of random samples from retailers and pharmacies. Food inspectors have been asked to pick samples from the same batch. The samples have been sent to the labs and the results are expected in a fortnight, designated officer, Dr R. Kathiravan told Deccan Chronicle. “Once the tests results are out, then it would be possible to say if they conform to standards,” he added.
