NSCN-K militant group puts a price on Indian soldiers’ head

Sources said all soldiers hailing from the region will be asked to take extra precautions

New Delhi: With the outlawed NSCN (Khaplang) having reportedly threatened to put a price on the head of every Indian soldier captured alive in the Northeast, the Indian Army is all set to issue a local advisory to soldiers stationed in the region to be alert, and more so when they are on leave. Sources said all soldiers hailing from the region will be asked to take extra precautions in view of the reported threat.

Sources said the NSCN(K) and other militant groups in the Northeast are itching to hit back after the Army’s recent cross-border raid on their camps in neighbouring Myanmar. The Army carried out the raid earlier in June after 18 of its soldiers were killed in an ambush in Manipur on June 4 by a group of militants operating under an umbrella outfit that has been formed by “uniting” some of the anti-India insurgent groups operating in the area.

Sources said the Army was aware of the circulation of messages on social media platforms purportedly on behalf of the NSCN(K) putting a price on the head of every Indian soldier captured alive. “Local advisories are being issued in view of this, asking the soldiers to be on alert,” defence sources said.

But the sources added that the militant groups in the Northeast had so far not shown any inclination to attack Indian soldiers hailing from the region when they are on home leave.
