I never thought I could act: Vijay Yesudas

Singer turned actor said that it was his faith in the team that made him say ‘yes’

You’ve heard him sing and dance but now he is all set to act, and that too, in a full-fledged role. Singer Vijay Yesudas who’s debuting as an actor in the Dhanush-starrer Maari is excited to don khaki in the film. Showering praise on director Balaji Mohan and Dhanush, Vijay says that he was initially apprehensive of taking up the role, but adds that it was his faith in the team that made him say ‘yes’.

Vijay says he had a gala time shooting the film. “I was on vacation in Spain when Dhanush called to say that Balaji Mohan was interested in roping me in for the role. Dhanush and I are good friends. Though I have had offers to act previously, I never took them up. But after listening to this script, I was very convinced and told Balaji that I could do it. And yes, it was a conscious decision to play a cop and I am happy about it,” he tells DC.

Ask him whether he plays a bad cop or good one, and Vijay says that he wants to surprise the audience without saying what kind of a cop he will play. “Since this is my first film as an actor, I prefer not to discuss it much. I’m not nervous, but would prefer to downplay it as of now,” he smiles.

Did he take any special training on the body language or building muscles? “I work out regularly and keep myself fit. I didn’t do anything extra to make me look like a cop,” he adds. Vijay plays a cop in the film who puts breaks on a local slum rowdy, ‘Maari’ played by Dhanush. The busy singer has also dubbed for his own character. Has he sung any song in the film? “Ah, no. I didn’t,” he smiles.
So, what’s next? “I never thought I would become an actor, but somehow it happened.

I am game for any kind of challenging role that comes my way,” he says. How about playing a hero? “Oh, sure. Why not,” he signs off with a laugh.
