‘It’s not for me to dream about roles’

Katrina Kaif, who plays Nawaz Mistry, a Parsi girl in the upcoming film Phantom opposite Saif Ali Khan, feels that she has had a blessed run in the industry.
She says, “I have been fortunate to have received the recognition I have got. There are so many actors who work hard and are super- talented but they may never get the recognition they deserve.” “When I have put in my 10 per cent, the directors and others have given me their 20 per cent… I have been lucky to have received fantastic returns in terms of love and appreciation from the audiences.”

Talking about playing a Parsi in Phantom, Katrina says, “There is no specific reason for the character to be Parsi. She is a doctor working with an NGO at the border.” “While I do not know much about what goes on, director Kabir Khan knows a lot about this world of extremists. My character is in contact with various radical and extremist groups… Saif sets out on a mission and meets this girl. Initially, she does not want to help him, but later she relents.”

Talking about the action scenes in the film, she says, “I absolutely did not do any preparations for the action sequences in Phantom. I had finished Dhoom 3 a year-and-a-half ago for which I had undergone rigorous training and also for Ek Tha Tiger before that. That fitness level was still there for Phantom.” “The film needed both Saif and I to look disturbed. It worked for me because during the making I was experiencing a conflicted time on the personal front… I was already
disturbed and it worked out well for me,” she says with a smile.

Katrina adds that she does not have a dream role. “For me every script is unique. It’s not for me to dream about roles. But yes, if it’s about someone dying from cancer but having an amazing attitude, or a woman with a broken heart but who’s a little psychotic, with a killer instinct — such characters would appeal to me. Recently, I have been very fortunate to work with director Abhishek Kapoor in Fitoor.”

All praises for Abhishek, she adds, “He was amazing…it’s the director who guides your performances. I understand you can never be honest every time, at times you may be tired and may have not given what he wants. I feel he had a very good eye for that.” Katrina is one of the few actresses who is not on social media. “It was an instinctive decision (to not be on social media). There are so many things I would love to do, like upload some of the pictures from Phantom which I clicked, or share information. But I don’t like the other side, the abuses and the mean things that people have to say.”

On a parting note, she adds that doing fewer films is a conscious decision. “I have Jagga Jasoos ahead of Phantom’s release. I also have Fitoor.” About settling down in life, she candidly says, “Haven’t thought about it yet.”
