Mumbai: Police source claims Sheena wanted to expose Indrani’s relationship with ex-husband Sanjiv to Peter.
The alleged illicit relationship between Indrani Mukerjea and her second husband whom she had divorced, Sanjiv Khanna, who is also her co-accused, triggered Sheena Bora’s murder, according to a highly reliable source monitoring investigations into the case. Embezzlement was also being probed as a likely motive though not a strong logical one, the same source said.
Apparently, Indrani had divorced Sanjiv who was still in love with her but parted ways at her wish. While investigating the case, the Khar police found proof that Sanjiv and Indrani were in touch till 2012 despite being divorced. It was also ascertained that Sanjiv had become Indrani’s business partner.
“Illicit relationship has always been a major reason for murders. We have probed many theories in this case, including honour killing, property matters, embezzlement etc. but all the leads till now point towards an illicit relation maintained by the two accused, even after breaking their marriage,” said the police source.
Sheena was said to have learnt about the relationship and would have further dented Indrani’s marriage with Peter Mukerjea who, according to the police, was already disturbed that Indrani never told him that Sheena and Mikhail were her children and let him think they were her siblings instead.
The source further said that Sheena told Peter about this and even got Rahul, Peter’s son from his first marriage, to tell his father the same. However, Peter chose not to believe the two of them. Sheena then started talking about it to her friends. Irked by Sheena’s attempts to break her marriage with Peter, Indrani had even fought with her, claimed the police source.
“Indrani feared losing the wealth and power she had gotten used to. Sheena got to know that her mother was still in a relationship Sanjiv. In our investigations, more than five persons have corroborated the fact that Sheena and Indrani had many conflicts and hated each other. Indrani also expressed her hatred towards Sheena but was trying to wash her hands off the murder.
We believe Indrani was threatened by the fact that Sheena would marry Rahul and further instigate Peter by proving to him that she was telling the truth about Indrani and Sanjiv’s relationship,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Sanjiv knew that their daughter Vidhi would suffer even more if Sheena entered the Mukerjea family. Sanjiv was still in love with Indrani and chose to eliminate Sheena and Mikhail for the sake of his business, daughter and former wife. While the police had not ruled out the embezzlement angle, illicit relationship seemed to be the prime motive during the current stage of the probe, according to the source.
This correspondent called Peter for his comments but he disconnected the phone calls and did not respond to text messages.
