Everyone can relate to Paayum Puli’s story: Suseenthiran
Suseenthiran is one of the most promising filmmakers of Kollywood
Suseenthiran is one of the most promising filmmakers of Kollywood who has the knack of making sensible movies with some commercial elements. The National Award winner is eagerly awaiting his next movie Paayum Puli starring Vishal and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead, which hits the marquee today. He speaks to DC about why he names his films with Rajinikanth’s titles, his inspiration for the movie’s script, the bond he shares with Vishal and how he made Kajal perform without prompting.
This is not the first time Vishal is donning a khaki. How different is his role in Paayum Puli?
He plays an undercover cop, an encounter specialist — I have portrayed him differently. Till the interval, he doesn’t wear a khaki uniform. You wouldn’t know when the hero would pounce on another person.
Is Paayum Puli based on the life of slain police officer Alwin Sudhan?
No, not at all! However, the story is inspired by real life incidents. Set against the backdrop of Madurai, the film is about how cops unite and react when criminals try to undermine one of them. Though a fiction, anyone can relate to it!
You are teaming up with Vishal as well as Kajal for the second time.
When I did Paandiya Naadu with Vishal, I was a bit apprehensive about approaching and telling him anything. Now, with Paayum Puli, we have come closer and share a great vibe. Kajal is a thorough professional. I told her that we would not prompt her with dialogues from off screen. She took it in the right spirit and performed extremely well.
Why do you opt for Rajini titles?
I wanted to use the title Paayum Puli for Paandiya Naadu. But we changed it later as we felt Paandiya Naadu was a better choice for my earlier film. I don’t seek Rajinikanth sir’s film titles purposely. It just happens. This title is very apt for the script and you would know when you watch the film.
Films made with your own script win at the box office. Whereas when you make films with other writers’ scripts, they are box office duds. Comment.
True! But Azhagar Saamiyin Kuthirai won the National Award and that was gratifying. Even as I was making Vikram’s Rajapattai, I knew the film wouldn’t work! It neither ran nor fetched me a name!
What next?
I am ready with my next script, which would fit stars like Ajith, Vijay and T’town star Pawan Kalyan. Apart from this, I am producing Vil Ambu. I also wrote script for Veera Theera Sooran.
