David Warner out of England ODI series with thumb injury

Australia have called up Aaron Finch, the World Cup-winning opener to replace him

London: Australia opener David Warner has been ruled out of the rest of the one-day international series against England and faces a race against time to be fit for next month's tour of Bangladesh after breaking his thumb at Lord's on Saturday.

He will now travel with the squad to Manchester, where the third of a five-match contest starts Tuesday, and fly home on Monday, with a replacement to be announced, a Cricket Australia spokesman said.

It is expected that his recovery time will take between four to six weeks. His best-case scenario has Warner, Australia's vice-captain, fit for the first Test in Bangladesh on October 9, but likely to miss the tour match which starts on October 3.

Warner, who struggled against the short ball during England's 3-2 Ashes series win, was struck a painful blow on the left thumb as he got in a tangle trying to play fast bowler Steven Finn's second-ball bouncer of the second one-day international at Lord's on Saturday.

After on-field treatment, Warner retired hurt for one and the 28-year-old played no further part in the match. Despite the setback, World Cup holders Australia went on to win Saturday's match by 64 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.

Australia have called up Aaron Finch, the World Cup-winning opener now with English county champions Yorkshire -- coached by former fast bowling champion Jason Gillespie -- for next week's remaining three one-dayers against England.

Finch, whose hamstring injury during the Indian Premier League scuppered his hopes of an earlier tour call-up, said Saturday: "It's very exciting to be back. It's unfortunate for David Warner and for me to come in under these circumstances, that's not ideal, but these things happen in cricket and it's great for me to be back," he said.

Meanwhile there was yet more misery this trip for Shane Watson as the luckless all-rounder, not on the field at the end of Saturday's match, suffered a calf strain.
