20-day exhibition of painting by artists to be held

Kollam: The art lovers of Kollam can now discuss art over a cup of coffee at the district’s first ‘eight-point gallery cafe’ set up by the District Tourism Promotion Council on the model of ‘Pepper house’ and ‘Daniel cafe’ in Kochi.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will inaugurate the gallery established in a renovated heritage building, ‘Parambarya,’ inside the Asramam guest house compound on October 2.
A 20-day exhibition of paintings by 20 artists will be held in this connection. The name ‘eight-point’ represents the eight creeks of Ashtamudi Lake and the eight art forms incorporated in the gallery. The works of eminent artists, including Kanayi Kunjiraman, K.K. Rajappan, K. Raghunathan, Kovalam Sunil, Pradeep Puthur, T.G. Jyothilal, K.V. Jyothilal, Nishanth, Sreelal, V. Satheeshan, Krishna Janardhana, K.K. Suresh, Aji Adoor, R.B. Shajith, Guru Prasad, Smitha M. Babu, Mothi, Linu, Ajeesh Raj, and Ajimon will be exhibited under the title ‘myth and land.’
“A cafe attached to the gallery provides the right ambience for those interested in discussing art over a cup of coffee. The gallery promotes not only painting, but all forms of art, including sculpture and installations. There are parallel movements happening in the country and Kochi Biennale is one among them,” said Shenley, the curator of the gallery.
The DTPC has spent '20 lakh for the renovation and setting up of properties in the museum. The gallery also includes a theatre, library with books pertaining to arts, and a venue for music.
On the day of inauguration, Kochi Biennale founder Bose Krishnamachari will take part in an ‘art talk and slide show’ which will be followed by a ‘gazal night’ led by eminent singer Umbayi.
Houseboat terminal
A houseboat terminal set up at the water gateway in Kollam will be inaugurated by the home minister at the same venue. The terminal constructed by the DTPC has facilities to accommodate 12 houseboats at a time.
The new terminal will help tourists avoid walking near the stinky slaughter house to board private houseboats. Six bays constructed as part of the terminal will accommodate 12 houseboats which can operate simultaneously.
