Congress claims credit for blast verdict
New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday said the sentencing of convicts in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case was the culmination of “pointed, precise and prompt action” by the then Vilasrao Deshmukh government and “strongest and quickest” steps by the former Manmohan Singh dispensation.
“We are happy and we welcome the fact that within eight- odd years, the trial court has been able to arrive at a primary conclusion” “This whole process was done on a priority basis by all agencies of the state and wherever required the central government, taking the strongest and the quickest steps both in the investigation and in the prosecution”, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.
He said that the then Congress government in Maharashtra took “pointed, precise and prompt action” following the horrendous events of July 2006. He noted the way the then Prime Minister had taken up the issue with Pakistan leading to a joint anti-terror mechanism.
Congress has always stood for zero-tolerance against terror combining the “right balance of stern pragmatic inflexible action against terrorism and combined it with appropriate dialogue to ensure that the large issue does not get into a sulk”, he said.
