Indrani Mukerjea is safe and out of danger, say JJ Hospital Doctors

Dr Lahane refuted claims that her samples had been sent for a re-test to the FSL

Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in her daughter Sheena Bora’s murder case, regained full consciousness on Sunday at the JJ Hospital. JJ Hospital dean T.P. Lahane said that she would be kept under observation for the next 48 hours.

On Sunday afternoon, while briefing the media, Dr Lahane, said, “She is out of danger now, but as a precautionary measure, we have kept her under complete observation. Indrani is now conscious, but drowsy. We have been giving her some fluids including water, which she consumed. She is responding to oral commands also and can now sit on her own.”

A cardio test will also be conducted on her after consulting with physicians and psychiatrists. The 43-year-old Indrani was rushed to JJ Hospital from Byculla jail on Friday afternoon in an unconscious state after she allegedly overdosed on anti-depressant pills.

When asked about the confusion over two contradictory reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory and Hinduja Hospital, Dr Lahane claimed that they were two different tests and said there was no contradiction. “There is a screening test which gives a clue as to how to treat the patient and the other is the confirmatory test, which is only carried out by the forensic laboratory,” he said.

Dr Lahane had on Saturday said that Indrani’s urine samples from the Hinduja Hospital laboratory confirmed that there were raised levels of benzodiazepine, an anti-depressant in her urine test. However, the FSL report said there were no traces of drugs found.

Dr Lahane refuted claims that her samples had been sent for a re-test to the FSL. “Clinically, we thought the cause was overdose of medicines and accordingly she was treated and she has responded,” he said.

Further, when asked if she could suffer a memory loss as a consequence of overdosing on anti-depressants, he said adding, “I can’t comment on this. In such cases, there are no chances and I believe that recovery is 90 to 100 per cent,”
