Movie review ‘Sher’: This tiger has no tale

Sher is an outdated, predictable and boring film

Cast: Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, Sonal Chauhan, Rao Ramesh, Rohini and Brahmanandam
Director: Mallikarjun
Rating: 2 stars

After the successful Pataas, actor Nandamuri Kalyan Ram has come up with the just-released Sher. Mallikarjuna is the director and Sonal Chauhan plays the female lead. This is the third time that the director and Kalyan Ram have worked together. Gautham (Kalyan Ram) is the son of a civil engineer (Rao Ramesh) and never accepts bribes. Meanwhile, a lady photographer, Nandini (Sonal Chauhan), clicks a photo of man saving an Indian flag from falling in the mud. She wins a prize for it, but the picture shows only the man’s hand with a tattoo of his name, Guatham. She tracks down Guatham and eventually falls in love with him.

But a local goon (Vikramjeet) wants to marry Nandini and meets her father (Sayaji Shinde), who is a police officer. He strikes a deal with him that he will be promoted as DGP if he agrees to their marriage. On the other hand Gautham starts killing bad guys one after the other. The reason behind Gautham’s frenzy is the crux of the story. There’s nothing to write home about Sher as director Mallik-arjun has completely failed to narrate a simple subject that deals with revenge drama. Most of the scenes are not connected and not a single scene is interesting. It makes one wonder why an actor like Kalyan Ram chose this kind of a mediocre and predictable subject after he delivered a big hit like Pataas.

The comedy isn’t funny and the marriage practice by villain Vikramjeet is unbearable. The director also hasn’t bothered to develop any of the characters properly like those of Kalyan Ram and Rao Ramesh. Performance-wise, Kalyan Ram does his part well though his character is not interesting. He has to thus show his talent in the action sequences and songs. Sonal is there only for the songs and is seen in skimpy skirts just for the glamour quotient. Rao Ramesh and Rohini play Kalyan Ram’s parents and the director has wasted both their talents.

Brahmanandam’s comedy is not up to the mark and it has become boring to watch him do the same stuff in every film. Comedian Ali, too, can’t come up with the laughs. The director has tried to repeat the hit antakshari scene from Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh, but hasn’t managed to pull it off. Mukesh Rishi, Ashish Vidyarthi and Shafi play the bad guys, but end up looking silly on screen. The cinematography is also average and the dialogues are not impressive. The music is middling except for a few songs. On the whole, Sher is an outdated, predictable and boring film. The director has completely failed once again though this is the third time he has worked with Kalyan Ram.
