I’d love to play village-based roles: Ashok

144 denotes a section of law in the Indian constitution but the film has nothing to do with it
Actor Ashok Selvan, who’s currently busy shooting Pirai Thediya Naatkal and Priyadarshan’s Sila Samayangalil, is quite kicked about 144, in which he plays an illegal car racer.
“The film, which has Shiva, Oviya and Sruthi Ramakrishna, revolves around the conflict between two villages. 144 denotes a section of law in the Indian constitution but the film has nothing to do with any crime or serious issue. The director has handled the script intelligently and for the first time, I have tried my hand at comedy,” says Ashok. What made him accept this film? Ashok says, “The film has a different screenplay and has been inspired by a real life incident. So far, I have done movies based in Chennai. I accepted this film because of the Madurai slang.
I don’t know why — but I loved the script to me when the director narrated it. Moreover, in the film, every character has its own story and all of them meet at one point. I took training from a friend for a couple of days to perfect the slang. I had a makeover in the film.”
Though after Soodhu Kavvum, Ashok has been flooded with offers to play similar roles, he rejected most of them, fearing he would be come typecast. “You know it’s tough for a new actor to turn down offers. I make sure I pick my films carefully. I want to do varied roles that connect to a wider audience and I take time to prepare for each role. But someday, I would love to play a rural character. It’s not that I am not getting offers for such stories, but they are not convincing enough. I think my image suits it better because I hail from a village,” Ashok smiles. The actor wistfully adds, “I would love to do something like Karthi’s Paruthiveeran. Those days, I was an aspiring actor and seeing that film, the image on cinema I had in my head changed for good and I came into films,” he recounts. Up next, Ashok has Kootathil Oruthan in his kitty where he’s paired with Priya Anand.
