Tamil Nadu floods: Schools to stay shut for another two days

Water-logging across localities forced schools to postpone reopening for another couple of days
Chennai: Around 200 to 300 schools, including matriculation and higher secondary, in Chennai and its suburbs are water logged. Although there were not much rains on Tuesday, water-logging across localities forced schools to postpone reopening for another couple of days.
Schools in Villivakkam, Saidapet, Tondiarpet, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam, T Nagar, Egmore, Chetpet, Nungambakam, Amenjikarai, Koyembedu, Adyar and Besant Nagar, are water logged, said A. Anitha, Chief Education Officer.
“Of the 1,000 schools around 200 to 300 schools are water logged. It is difficult to enter inside schools located in these areas as they are completely flooded,” she said.
In a circular to parents, APL Global School Pvt Ltd also cited water-logging as the main reason for an additional two days of holidays. Announcing that schools would remain closed on November 18 and 19, the administration added that a decision on working on Friday and Saturday will be communicated by
Thursday.
Malati Ryan, principal, Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School said that as she can’t go against the decision of the government. “We completely stand by the decision of the government. It has been two weeks and during this period we usually conduct the examination for all classes. But given the weather condition it is getting delayed,” she said.
Ryan did not rule out the possibility of Christmas holidays getting slashed as schools are losing precious days now due to inclement weather.
Even if the school chooses to open many students would not be able to attend as they live in areas that are completely flooded. As an additional precaution, the Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur district administration has declared a holiday on
Wednesday after consulting with meteorological department.
“The Met department said that there will be heavy downpour on Wednesday. The collectorate has, therefore, declared holiday for all schools and colleges,” said an official.
