November 26 will be celebrated as Constitution Day, every year in India

Mumbai: November 26 was declared as Constitution Day to spread the importance of the Indian constitution after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Dr. Ambedkar Memorial at Indu-Mills Compound, Mumbai. To spread the significance of the Indian Constitution November 26 will be celebrated as Constitution Day, every year in India.

Before the parliament session today PM Modi stressed on how he spoke to top leaders of various parties and appealed for a peaceful conduct of parliamentary session. “Our Constitution is a ray of hope. When I say a ray of hope, I mean H for harmony, O for opportunity, P for people's participation and E for equality”, he said.

There are a few facts about the Indian Constitution that you might be unacquainted with. Here are some of them to enlighten you:

  • The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, and came into effect on 26 January 1950
  • The Constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring its citizens of justice, equality, and liberty, and endeavours to promote fraternity among them
  • India has the longest constitution in the world. It has 448 articles, 12 schedules and 94 amendments
  • The Objectives Resolution was moved by Jawaharlal Nehru on December 13, 1946. It served as a roadmap for the constitution
  • The drafting committee had handwritten and calligraphed the constitution - both in English and in Hindi. There was no typing or print involved
  • The original copies of the Constitution of India are kept in special helium-filled cases in the library of the Parliament of India
  • Some of the points in constitution are borrowed from other constitutions such as the principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity that were taken from the French constitution
  • On January 26, 1950, the Indian Government also adopted Sarnath, the Lion Capital of Ashoka with the wheel, bull, and horse as the national emblem of India
  • Indian constitution is known as one of the world's best constitution especially since it has only seen 94 amendments
  • November 26, 2015 marks India’s first ever Constitution Day
