Most parts of Chennai go sans power due to heavy rain
Chennai: Most parts of the city, particularly South Chennai, faced power outage for over 24 hours due to floods caused by unprecedented rain. According to senior Tangedco officials, flood waters entered 25 sub stations in the city and its suburbs leading to outages. “In the continuous rainfall, seven substations in city limits got inundated and all other substations (SS) are located on the outskirts,” the official said adding that 25 water-logged SS included those at Madambakkam, Thiru-mulaivakkam, Mudichur, Thillai Ganga Nagar and Perumbakkam.
Power supply to areas that are connected to the inundated substations can be restored only after flood waters recede, the official said. In some areas, back feeding from other sub stations has been arranged to supply power, the official added.
As a precautionary measure, power supply has been suspended in water logged areas. If junction boxes or transformers are under water, supply is disconnected. On complaints of power outages in areas that are not affected by floods, the official said it would be restored after verification by field staff.
