Industrial waste power plan gets lukewarm response

Most of the industrial waste projects have been commissioned in East and West Godavari districts.
Visakhapatnam: The state government has failed to tap energy from industrial waste in Vizag though the city is one of the vibrant industrial corridors. According to the annual revenue requirement filed with the Electricity Regulatory Commission, the AP Eastern Discom will have to procure 111 MW of power generated through non-conventional energy sources in the current fiscal with the active participation of New & Renewal Energy Development Corporation. The target is to generate 14 MW from industrial waste and and 6.14 MW from municipal waste in the current fiscal.
Industrial waste-based power projects only for 7.5 MW have been commissioned so far in the state, according to a report from Nedcap. The city has only one industrial waste power project of 0.75 MW capacity despite having good number of industries. Asked about the lukewarm response to the waste energy project, Nedcap district manager P.V. Rama Raju said, “Industry owners are setting up waste energy projects provided they find enough waste and the process becomes financially viable.”
The plan to generate energy from municipal waste has failed to take off due to the unattractive power tariff. The city has good scope to generate energy from the 1,200 metric tonnes of solid municipal waste generated daily. “The bidders are not interested in setting up municipal solid waste-based power projects as the tariff set by regulatory commission would not make the projects financially viable,” an official from the Eastern Discom said.
Some environmentalists have opined that government should offer reasonable subsidy for setting up waste-based energy projects as it addresses the problem of disposing of garbage, is environmentally sound and helps in natural resource conservation and reduction in emission of greenhouse gases.
