Azad National Urdu University to seek help from Pakistan universities
Hyderabad: The Maulana Azad National Urdu University might contribute towards developing an India-Pakistan relationship in the education sector. University vice-chancellor Prof. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz said on Saturday that he wanted to coordinate with an open university from Pakistan in the field of Urdu text books for various subjects for MANUU students. Urdu textbooks for most were lacking in quality and students were forced to learn from English textbooks.
Speaking to the media about the poor state of Urdu textbooks he said that the university, over 17 years, had published Urdu literature that was not of use to its students.
There were also some teachers in the university who had no knowledge of Urdu and he said that a course would be developed by the varsity’s Urdu department so that they could learn the language.
It was also announced that MANUU would be inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its next big event, most probably the convocation ceremony. Taking a step towards making it easy for Madrasa students to join mainstream higher education in MANUU, the university will be developing one-year bridge courses for all its courses. Madrasa students will have to clear an entrance exam, after which they can get admitted to the bridge course which will enable them to apply to the university.
Karimnagar Member of Parliament, Mr B. Vinod Kumar visited the university on Saturday and said that the Telangana government had granted five acre land to MANUU to start a new campus in the district.
The university, however, remains underfunded as it has received just Rs 205 crore of the proposed Rs 800 crore budget in three years of the 12th plan. Speaking on the issue of two female students being expelled from their hostel, one male student getting suspended and issuing show-cause notices to nearly a dozen students, the V-C said that discipline needed to be maintained and action was taken against those who had violated rules.
On the issue of night restrictions in the hostel, he said that they would remain in force because that was the norm in MANUU and if any student did not like it, he could apply to universities where such norms did not exist.
Planning to tie up with Turkey: V-C
MANUU chancellor Zafar Sareshwala, a close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that anyone, including former cricketer Mohd Azharuddin who was interested in the development of MANUU was welcome.
Mr Sareshwala also said that MANUU was planning to tie up with Mevlana University, Konya, in Turkey. Representatives from the Turkish university visited MANUU on Saturday and also showed interest to start a course on Turkish studies.
Mr Mohd. Azharuddin had won a Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in 2009. In the 2014 general elections, he contested on a Congress ticket from Tonk -Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan but lost to the BJP candidate.
