Illegal lenders hire women to go after loan defaulters

At least six women had approached the police alleging harassment by teams of women.

Hyderabad: Illegal financiers in the Old City are now using women to run their show.

After police tightened vigil, instead of sending rowdy-sheeters to threaten the victims, financiers are now sending their women employees or relatives to threaten and extort money from female members of the victims’ families.

The South Zone police had picked up one woman, from Hussaini Alam, besides 29 men on Monday. A special team has also identified seven women who were part of the financiers’ squad. After their employers were caught, they went absconding. Cops are on the look out for them.

At least six women had approached the police alleging harassment by teams of women. They said, unlike male goondas, the women would enter the houses and abuse the wives or sisters of the debtors.

“They would use all kinds of abusive words to harass and threaten the female members of the family. Because their husbands took money from financiers, these women had to face the abuse,” said Mr V. Satyanarayana, DCP of South Zone.

The squad is active in Chatrinaka and Falak-numa, from where most of the victims approached the police to inform about the new trend.

In another development, police also found that financiers are now lending money only after taking documents of property that can be mortgaged from the victims, so that if the interest payments are delayed, they can transfer the properties in their names. “They take Powers of Attorney from the debtors and do not return them until the victims pay the huge amount of interest,” the DCP said.
